About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

user comment BH Fitness X4 Elliptical Trainer Solid and effective exercise machine

Review Date: April 16, 2009
Reviewer: C. C. Watt, Riverside, CA United States
I've used the BH x8, which looks identical to the x4 pictured, and it is very solid, easy to program, easy to use, and effective. It feels like a very good workout, and it's low-impact, so it doesn't bother my shins like jogging or even a treadmill would. It feels solid and doesn't jiggle when you move. It's also pretty quiet, with just a swishswish sound as you work out.

The upper-body movement takes a little getting used to, perhaps especially for someone with short arms, but it's doable, and it feels good. And you can always hold onto the other handles, which monitor your heartrate, instead.

I plan to buy one as soon as I can afford it.
user comment BH Fitness X4 Elliptical Trainer Well worth the money I spent

Review Date: August 7, 2009
Reviewer: L. Yeager, Oklahoma
I bought the BH Fitness X4 Elliptical Trainer at a Gold Box price and am well pleased with my purchase. It was a little intimidating at first when the box arrived and there were so many parts inside. However, it was obvious by the packing and the instructions that this was not a cheaply-made piece of equipment. It was well laid out how to put it together, but even so expect it to take at least 3 hours assembly time from start to finish. The end result is quite impressive. The picture doesn't quite prepare a person that it's going to stand so tall and take up so much room, but it makes me feel like I got my money's worth in a gym-quality piece of equipment.

As for the actual use of it, I had to start off slow and build up to even 15 minutes on it because of the workout intensity it provides. And I've not even scratched the surface of its capability. This particular trainer probably works best for people over approximately 5'5" tall and up to probably 6'2" tall, but that's just my guess. Everyone at my house falls in that range so it's good for us. It runs smoothly and quietly which is always a plus. No problems so far.
user comment BH Fitness X4 Elliptical Trainer Decent Machine for the Money

Review Date: May 3, 2010
Reviewer: Kel,
I purchased this elliptical in December as a gift to myself. The assembly was fun; I did it by myself and it took about 3 hours to complete. They recommend two people assemble this unit and for your own sanity, you really should have someone help you. The base of the unit is fairly heavy. Once completed I used it ONE TIME and found that the yellow rollers started to come apart. I contacted support and explained what happened. Apparently the unit I received shipped with defective rollers and they sent me a new set that looked different. Since replacing the rollers I have been using the BH Fitness X4 elliptical with no issues. I would agree with people who said the screen is kinda hard to read once you are really working out on it. However I can just move my head back a little and see everything fine. If you are considering a low cost machine that can handle a heavier person (320 or so), it is a great buy as far as I am concerned. Just watch the rollers on the bottom and have them send you new ones if you notice them shredding.

Product Description

Bring the gym into your home and enjoy an efficient, high-caliber workout with the Horizon EX-67 elliptical trainer, which works your legs as well as your upper body. Perfect for rigorous training routines, the EX-67 offers an eight-level electronic resistance system, along with a heavy 14-pound flywheel that maintains pedal and arm momentum while offering a smooth, quiet operation. More significantly from a user perspective, it offers 13 goal-oriented programs. You can choose one of three different goals (time, distance, and calories) and one of three terrains (manual, reverse train, and hills). The 2.4-by-4.8-inch orange backlit LCD screen, meanwhile, offers key workout feedback, helping you develop an effective training regimen.

Horizon employs a heavy-duty flywheel that provides continuous velocity, so as your feet move the pedals, the flywheel's momentum carries you through the complete motion. As a result, the trainer feels very natural and not at all choppy. Plus, the flywheel is extremely quiet, making the trainer ideal for home use. Horizon also applies a magnetic brake to the flywheel, creating more consistent resistance during a workout. And the instep-stacked flywheel design--where the flywheel sits above the pedals rather than in line with them--delivers a lower step-on height for easy access, along with a stride length that's longer, more natural, and more versatile regardless of the user, workout type, and fitness level. As an added benefit, the unit is smaller and shorter, so it fits in almost any room, including low-ceiling basements.

Horizon's Ergoflow elliptical geometry is built around your body, not the machine's components. The distance between the pedals have been narrowed to create a more natural walking motion, and the pivoting footpad imitates how your foot's position changes as you move forward. And a more natural, ergonomic movement means less stress on your knees, hips, and lowers back, so you enjoy longer workouts and faster results. Other details include an MP3 port with speakers and an audio-in jack, contact heart-rate grips, a built-in cooling fan, and an 18-inch stride length with Custom Stride flexibility.

  • Resistance: Electronic
  • Resistance range: 1 to 10 resistance levels

user comment Horizon Fitness EX 67 Elliptical Trainer Solid Machine for Good Price

Review Date: December 7, 2009
Reviewer: J. D. Macdonald, Denver, CO
Assembly:
Although it took several hours, the instructions were fairly clear and the diagrams were helpful.

Usage:
We've had it for several days now and are impressed. Quiet operation (in our living room and it doesn't disturb other things that are going on) and solid feel (not cheap like many ellipticals in the lower price range). We also appreciate how it fits in a normal height room.

The EX-67 provides a good workout and the user interface is easy to use.

Overall, for the price, this was well worth our $ because of the good workout and practical nature of machine.

About Life Fitness
What started as one man's pursuit to improve his own physical condition, eventually turned into a global fitness revolution. That man was Keene P. Dimick, the mastermind behind the legendary Lifecycle® exercise bike. The story of Life Fitness began when two young entrepreneurs, Ray Wilson and Augie Nieto, saw the promise of Dr. Dimick’s invention. Even though it was slightly ahead of its time, they believed the Lifecycle exercise bike could help generations of athletes, trainers, exercisers, and people everywhere live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

Wilson and Nieto bought the rights to the Lifecycle bike from Dr. Dimick, perfected it, and sold it out of a motor home to health clubs across America. Despite the overwhelming odds and initial unpopularity of the Lifecycle exercise bike, the two passion-filled pioneers turned a two-man operation and a seemingly impossible vision into a prosperous reality. Along the way, they shaped the future of Life Fitness as well as the fitness industry, bringing cardiovascular training into the mainstream and helping ignite the health club boom.

Today, Life Fitness is the global leader in designing and manufacturing a full line of reliable, high quality fitness equipment for commercial and consumer use. It is the number one brand of fitness equipment in health clubs worldwide.

The 1050 STS will even charge your iPod. Of course, the trainer is far more than a stereo system, as it also offers a variety of preset workout programs, including 20 personal trainer workouts that automatically adjust the resistance level so you can focus on aerobic, weight loss, or performance goals, and four heart rate (HR) workouts that help you stay in the right training zone. The HR workouts automatically increase the resistance when you need to raise your heart rate and decrease the resistance when you need to lower it.

Product Description

An affordable way to burn calories at home without taking up a ton of space, the Stamina SpaceMate dual-action elliptical trainer is a terrific choice for home workout enthusiasts. Elliptical trainers offer a unique appeal, as they burn a similar number of calories as jogging but without the risk of injury to the back, knees, hips, or ankles. The machines are also ideal for older people or folks who are recovering from injury, as their low-impact design won't tax the joints. And thanks to the dual-action handlebars, you can exercise both the arms and the feet at the same time--something that can't be said for traditional jogging. The movement of the dual handlebars instead mimics cross-country skiing, helping you engage the upper 30 percent of your body for better fitness results. Best of all, the trainer boasts a notably small footprint, so you don't have to dedicate a huge workout area to fit the device in your home.

The SpaceMate offers such features as a variable tension knob that makes it easy to increase or decrease your workout intensity; large, smooth-gliding foot pedals; and an easy-to-read electronic fitness monitor for tracking your speed, time, distance, or calories burned. Ideal for losing weight, building endurance, or toning muscles, the trainer measures 32 by 52.4 by 22.25 inches (W x H x D), supports up to 250 pounds, and is backed by a one-year warranty on the frame and a 90-day warranty on parts.
