Product Description

Outfitted with Kettler's Induktions Brake System, high-quality drive components, and a sealed ball-bearing construction, the Kettler CTR 3 elliptical trainer offers a terrific way to get fit, with a design that's a significant step above most other trainers. The CTR 3 features a 50-pound flywheel that provides a comfortable, smooth-flowing, natural running or walking pattern with virtually no impact. As a result, the trainer provides a safer workout than high-impact running or kickboxing classes. Kettler's Induktions Brake System, meanwhile, offers an adaptable manual or programmable 25- to 400-watt electromagnetic resistance range. The resistance range is far larger than on most other trainers, allowing different users to select up to 75 training levels, with no friction or wear to the brake components. And thanks to the Kettler eSYS system, the trainer can make precise ergonomic, biomechanical, and electronic adjustments to different body types, helping it accommodate everyone from beginners to demanding athletes.

The CTR 3 also includes a state-of-the-art training computer that offers six adjustable hill profiles, two manual options, and two heart-rate-controlled programs to keep you motivated. Plus, the computer tracks your total distance, time, calories burned, and upper pulse limit, helping you get the most from your workout. And if that's not enough, you can connect the CTR 3 to your computer via the USB interface to download interactive software and additional preset programs from www.kettlerusa.com. Other features include a wireless Polar T34 heart rate transmitter; integrated hand pulse sensors; a sturdy, powder-coated, ergonomically formed tubing frame with transport castors and levelers; and a keypad control that makes it easy to adjust the resistance level. The CTR 3 includes a lifetime warranty on the frame, a two-year warranty on parts, and a one-year warranty on labor.

user comment Kettler HKS CTR3 Elliptical Cross Trainer The CTR3--Amateur Opinion

Review Date: August 11, 2009
Reviewer: G. Streib, Atlanta, Georgia United States
This is the only elliptical machine that I have ever set-up or used, so my comments are probably most useful to the inexperienced. Most importantly, this machine offers a great work out, and it is as fun to use as any piece of exercise equipment that I can imagine. The stride movements are natural, and the included programs are challenging. (This does plug in, and this is not apparent in most photos.) If you are looking for a way to get exercise, then getting one of these machines is certainly something to consider. I do also have a Kettler spinning bike. I enjoy the bike, but the elliptical has more appeal to other family members. Also, while it is easier at my house to watch TV on my bike, I do get a better work out on the elliptical. There is no logic to this, I suppose, but this is my experience.

The machine looks great. There is certainly some ownership pleasure. This is not something that you would need to hide, nor does it take up a lot of space. You can find reviews on the Web with the German engineering comments, and this is probably true. This is basically a set of metal tubes, but it all comes together very well.

This arrives at your house in a big heavy box...not even a regular elliptical user can lift it. We have some steps. The delivery guy really made an effort to help me get this in the house, and I hope that you are that lucky. With two us we still had to open the box; the core flywheel unit is still one piece--good luck. My bike is upstairs, which was no cake walk, but the flywheel is not as heavy.

Also, I found the elliptical tough to assemble. Again, it was harder than the bike. I was missing two bolts, and it took two tries to get replacements to me. This sat unfinished for about a week. I have read some say it took an hour to put one of these together. Every one of these assembly jobs is different. Thinking about it now, with parts, an hour seems possible. Things went awry for us, and I am not sure exactly why. I did go and buy a metric wrench set (about $20,00) that helped me wrap this up once the parts arrived. Maybe we lost a wrench while this was sitting around awaiting parts, maybe the included wrenches did not work well enough, not sure. There are many bolts to tighten, and the wrenches I bought really made a difference. You want everything tight.

I gave this a four out of five, and I think this is a solid investment. Do think about the logistics, though. This is a big, heavy item with many parts to put together. I can say, though, that the assembly--and the price--were worth it. This machine certainly appears it will work well for many years.

The Quiet-Glide Poly-V Belt drive technology utilizes a multi-ribbed, supersilent Poly-V belt to create the quietest elliptical drive possible. You also get a crisp, blue backlit display with an alphanumeric message center, seven feedback windows, and an impressive number of programs--including the unique Sprint 8, developed with Phil Campbell, MS, MA, and author of Ready, Set, Go! Synergy Fitness. Effective for all ages and fitness levels, a Sprint 8 workout takes only 20 minutes, improves speed and performance, helps to cut body fat, tone muscle and boost energy, and naturally releases growth hormone (your "fitness" hormone). About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

user comment Life Fitness CT9500HR Classic Rear Drive Cross Trainer Elliptical (Factory Refurbished) Buying Notes on the CT-9500HR Elliptical by Life Fitness

Review Date: December 24, 2008
Reviewer: ILikeAmazon, Arlington, VA USA
This is an expensive purchase. Before you plunk down money I thought, since I've done some research, that I'd give you some insights.

There are a number of "9500" series of Life Fitness equipment. To make it more complicated, the 9500 Elliptical comes in a number of varieties. The "rear drive" unit comes with different panel instrumentation (the newer versions offering more options and "zone" training). So, if you buy one of these units (and they'll all be used/refurbished at this point), you need to be *very* careful as to precisely what you're getting.

Regarding the 9500 rear drive (Model: "CT-9500HR") version, please be sure you get a good warranty of some kind. This unit was known for having two maintenance problems in high-use/gym settings: 1) rear drive / bearing failure; 2) Heart Rate grip handles become loose and stop working. Life Fitness has tried to address this issue through 9500 updates (which is why a later 9500 series unit might be a better bet). Key is to make sure your warranty covers both areas. A bearing failure could cost you $500 to repair. I suggest a comprehensive 12 month warranty, which won't be cheap, unfortunately.

That said, this is BY FAR my favorite elliptical unit. I'm 5'8" and it has a perfect stride length (approx 18") [Taller people (6'+) might prefer a bigger / adjustable unit]. The unit is relatively quiet, convenient, and has for me a perfect stride in both directions (the unit has a great reverse mode). It doesn't require a plug so is very portable. It's easy to read or watch TV while using this machine.

Hope this has been helpful.

Reviewer: mart, havertown, pa, US
This machine is made to last. Heavy guage steel and quality welds insure a long life. The movement of the machine is very smooth. The display isn't great, you can't record your workouts. But if you want a machine that will last and is a pleasure to use, get this one.
user comment Lifecore LC5000 Self Powered Light Commercial Grade Elliptical Trainer Excellent product

Review Date: April 1, 2010
Reviewer: Mark S. Bergland, River Falls, Wisconsin
The Lifecore LC5000 is very well built, and is really the equivalent of a professional-grade machine for a fraction of the price. Fit and finish are excellent, and minimal assembly is required. You do need quite a bit of space, such as a room with a high ceiling (otherwise head clearance will be minimal for a taller person). It is also very heavy, so be sure to have help bringing it inside (most of the assembly has been done for you, other than the handlebars and trim pieces). I liked the way that the relatively few hardware pieces were packaged to reduce the chance of anything being missed during packaging. This is a very durable trainer that should last for many years. It also would be suitable for heavier people, because of its very strong construction .

This LC-5000 elliptical is truly a commercial machine. This machine is very smooth and comfortable. The LC-5000 has a self generating feature so no need to plug it in. The console is large and very easy to see the programs. The foot pedals have cushion on them which feels really good on my feet after a long day at work. Search no more!!
